This very popular piece evokes a sense of haunting beauty and warmth in the opening section through to a feeling of grandeur as the music soars in the middle section before drawing to a beautiful close. A simple melody presented in the first violins and moving accompaniment lines in other sections make this piece very accessible to less experienced ensembles without compromising style.

Teaching Notes

Heartland is popular with players and with audiences because of its rich tones and beautiful yet simple melodic line presented in the first violins for most of this piece. Ensure a good balance between all parts is achieved and make use of dynamics. Bass and cello lines in this work are very similar which is helpful for beginning bass players. Use of strong bows and vibrato if possible in bass lines will enhance the depth and warmth of this work.
