The rhythmic motif introduced by the cello underpins the entire structure of the piece and creates a momentum that builds throughout. All sections share this motif. The score allows 1st violins who are beginning to play in position to move briefly to 3rd on the E string [playing no higher than C] with shifts clearly indicated on the score. For players not confident with position work, these brief sections can be played divisi allowing them to remain in 1st position playing an octave lower.
